ImageGood for the skin. Good for the wallet. Good for the earth.

Those three tenets inform all aspects of how we run our business. And while developing high quality, safe, affordable shaving products steals the limelight most of the time, our long-time sustainability efforts are some of the things of which we are most proud. From our ingredients and solar-powered manufacturing methods to other business practices, we make every effort to protect the earth and leave a neutral – if not negative – footprint.

One of the contributing factors in our ability to do that is by partnering with the Trees for the Future organization and planting a tree for every purchase.

So what is Trees for the Future? It’s an organization that aims to improve conditions for impoverished communities. Since its beginning in 1989, it, with help from company’s like Pacific Shaving Company, has helped to plant over 80 million trees in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

How does planting trees make life better for these communities? Trees themselves provide important things like food, firewood, and building materials. But Trees for the Future doesn’t stop there. They also spearhead educational efforts in regards to things like:

All of these things work together to improve the living conditions of the local population.

So why plant a tree? As the people at Trees for the Future say: Because they help to change lives. And that’s a goal we here at Pacific Shaving Company are proud to support.

As Earth Day approaches, hopefully we all take the opportunity to do a little soul-searching about how we care for our planet. We think about big changes, such as methods to incorporate more green energy sources into our communities, but we also examine what small daily habits we can adjust within our own homes in order to more positively impact the environment.

Here are a few key areas to consider this Earth Month:

Things We Grow

So many items we purchase at the grocery store can easily be grown in gardens or containers at home.  Herbs such as cilantro, basil, and oregano grow well in small spaces, can be quite decorative (and aromatic!), and taste better when they are freshly cut. For those of you with kids, it’s also more fun to celebrate nature when we bring it closer to us.  Planting a tree or shrub in your yard is a fun activity during Earth Month that produces enjoyment throughout the rest of the year.  Planting it in a location that will eventually provide shade might reduce cooling costs even later, too.

Things We Buy

You might get frustrated when you see a ring of rust from a can shaving cream on the side of a tub or shower. But think about the damage it does *after* it’s discarded. Identify sources of large/superfluous packaging and consider potential alternatives. It’s an easy way to reduce waste and reduce your carbon footprint.

Things We Flush

Just one household can pour several different chemicals down its drains every day.  A few small and simple changes can make a big difference in our planet’s future.  Replacing just a few types of household cleaning products with natural and proven substitutes, such as vinegar or baking soda, is an easy way to keep your home clean while protecting the environment. Replacing a few of the personal products you use in daily grooming with environmentally conscious choices is another way to help both the planet and your own health.

Here at Pacific Shaving Company, we consider all of the topics above as part of the guiding principles of our business. Each unique blend of ingredients, which include natural substances such as sunflower seed oil, aloe leaf juice, and bamboo stem, are environmentally friendly, and safe for your skin.  We also package our products in small but mighty sizes that reduce waste. And just to be sure - every purchase plants a tree too!

Happy Earth Month!

Small steps count! As part of our ‘Every Purchase Plants a Tree’ program, Pacific Shaving Company is celebrating the planting of its 100,000th tree across 15 countries — from Brazil to Uganda. That’s enough to cover New York’s Central Park four times.

Just like turning off the faucet while shaving, shutting off the lights when leaving a room, and recycling – planting a tree for every purchase is a small green step that adds up over time. Trees clean our air, filter our water and provide a habitat for half of the world’s wildlife.

For a family-run business that started out catering to a small number of grooming enthusiasts online, this milestone and its positive environmental impact is a great way to demonstrate that small steps can have a big impact over time and just one of the ways Pacific Shaving aims to give back and bring sustainable business practices to the resource-heavy world of personal care products.

Eco-expert Josh Dorfman, author of The Lazy Environmentalist and The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget (when not hosting Sirius radio shows and Discovery Channel TV shows among other things), has been a fan, advocate and friend (not necessarily in that order) of Pacific Shaving Company for many years now. I love his take on eco/green products’ place in the world. He believes that “consumers really don’t want green products. rather, they want awesome products that are also green.” Exactly! (btw this is exactly why I have gone back to the heavy duty stuff for my dish washing detergent. The ‘green’ stuff just doesn’t clean well.)

When I told Josh about this 100,000 trees-planted milestone, his response was great, “Pacific Shaving is the rare eco-friendly company that actually outperforms the competition. Getting a smooth, close shave while taking a small step to preserve the planet is my kind of environmental action and a natural choice for lazy environmentalists on Earth Day.”

So, in the spirit of Earth Month, and our 100,000th tree planted, we’re encouraging individuals and businesses alike to find their own unique way to make a difference. It starts with a small step.
