Say what you want about Walmart, but its plan “to hire every veteran who wants a job, provided that the veterans have left the military in the previous year and did not receive a dishonorable discharge” is unbelievable.

I have to say, I’m not quite sure how they can do this though. Company officials said they believe the program, which will officially begin on Memorial Day—May 27 this year—will lead to the hiring of more than 100,000 people in the next five years, the length of the commitment. It seems inevitable that they are going to come up against over-staffing at certain locations. Then what happens? Do the more tenured, non-veteran employees get the axe? It will be interesting to see if there are any unintended, negative consequences down the road. I hope not, because this is really impressive.

It would be really cool if another big companylike this announced they are going to broaden their hiring and employ anyone who’s been unemployed for more than a year. That would be even cooler.


PS: Wal-Mart’s foundation has consistently been among the most generous contributors to veterans’ charities, committing to donate $20 million to veterans’ causes by 2015. Good stuff, Walmart.


A posse of spooky spiders and a gaggle of warty witches have been calling my living room window home for over a month now. My four year old broke out the decorations as soon as it was officially autumn, and in an interesting interior decorating move, decided to embellish just one window with the festive decals. This is one creepy window.

He’s also tested out his candy satchel by filling it with toys and walking briskly around our apartment (it works), given his skeleton costume a test drive (it, too, works) and covered our front door with abstract sketches of vampires, mummies and Frankenstein. This kid is ready for Halloween.

I, meanwhile, have been reveling in his four-year-oldness. A successful Halloween for W. means eating two pieces of candy in a row and counting the Iron Man costumes sported by his fellow preschoolers. I don’t have to worry about him slicing his tongue on a chocolate bar tainted by a razor blade or chomping into a poisoned apple. All treats will be mama-approved, of course. I also don’t have to worry about him roaming dark streets alone, knocking on strangers doors or masterminding disturbing pranks with his friends. Yet.

Yes, W’s innocent take on Halloween means no toilet paper wrapped around tress — do teenagers still do this? — and no shaving cream fights. He’d be hard-pressed to gear up for a shaving cream battle with the supplies in my bathroom, anyway. I’m stocked with nothing but tubes of low lather cream, the good stuff, where a little goes a long way. We’d both be sorry if he armed himself with my shaving cream.

Wishing you a satisfying All Hallow’s Eve. However — and with whomever — you choose to celebrate it. Just keep your toilet paper away from my trees.

The best way to understand the properties of the herb marshmallow root is to take a closer look at its official genus name: althaea officinalis. Althea means “to heal” in Greek. That really says it all.

Treatment protocol for jellyfish stings by Dr. Paul Auerbach, an emergency physician at Stanford Hospital and author of medical textbook on wilderness medicine:

If you are stung by a jellyfish, rinse the wound with seawater; do not use fresh water, as this may increase envenomation by stimulating more nemocysts, the jelly’s stinging cells, which become embedded in the skin. Remove any attached tentacles with forceps or a gloved hand. Apply a soak-compress of vinegar or isopropyl rubbing alcohol to the wound for about 30 minutes or until the pain subsides.

Then apply a lather of shaving cream and shave the affected area with a safety razor to remove any remaining nematocysts. If the stinging sensation persists, reapply the vinegar or rubbing alcohol for another 15 minutes.

Auerbach also advised being prepared for a possible allergic reaction. Symptoms may include difficuty breathing, difficulty swallowing, hives, a swollen tongue or collapse. In such cases, call 911 and use an epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, if available.

One of the most interesting parts of running a personal care products company is speaking with customers and learning about their standard primping routine, especially when it comes to shaving. The advice I receive often varies—and even contradicts at times. But one thing is clear: there is no shortage of it. It seems that when it comes to shaving, everyone has at least one great tip or ‘lesson-learned’ to share.

So a few years ago, we set out to compile a world-class list (for shavers, by shavers) of how, when, where or with what to shave. We reached out online and the response was overwhelming. We received hundreds of responses from men and women and after months of reviewing and editing, we’ve narrowed it down (sort of) to this pdf guide: 125 Tips for a Better Shave.

As you’ll see, standard tenets of shaving came through (“try to shave in or after the shower”), while others contradicted (“Shave against the grain for a closer shave”; “Never shave against the grain”). Still others, while odd, seemed to just make good, common sense (“never in a moving car.”)

For some it’s a chore. For others, it’s an enjoyable morning routine. Wherever you fall on that spectrum, you’re sure to find at least one practical gem in this report. After all, here at Pacific Shaving Company, we’re all about practical. We don’t believe that anyone really needs high-tech shaving systems. The Word on White Tea

There are many things that I love about our All Natural Shaving Cream. It’s thick; its lather is low and a little goes a long, long way.

And then there’s the white tea.

I love the white tea. In addition to stellar ingredients like organic sunflower seed oil and organic shea butter, All Natural Shaving Cream includes a good dose of skin-protecting white tea.
